Struggling with knee pain? Here’s what you need to know about when knee replacement becomes necessary.

Why do People Need Knee Replacements?

Knee replacement becomes viable when knee pain interferes with everyday life and conservative treatments fail. Common reasons include:

\

Osteoarthritis: The most prevalent cause, leading to joint cartilage degeneration and severe pain.

\

Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune condition that inflames and erodes knee joints.

\

Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Injury-related knee damage that accelerates joint deterioration.

\

Severe Fractures: Bone damage from accidents that make knee function irreparable

\

Genetic Predisposition: Some individuals are more likely to develop degenerative joint conditions.

Why do People Need Knee Replacements?
Understanding the types of knee replacement surgeries can help you choose the right treatment.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgeries

Knee replacement is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each type of knee replacement surgery is chosen based on the severity of joint damage, patient lifestyle, and overall health condition.

Total Knee Replacement (TKR):

  • The entire knee joint is replaced with artificial components made of metal and medical-grade plastic.
  • Beneficial for patients with severe arthritis orextensive joint damage affecting overall mobility and quality of life.

Partial Knee Replacement (PKR):

  • This surgery involves replacing only the damaged section of the knee, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
  • Ideal for patients with localized arthritis and results in faster recovery and improved joint function.

Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery:

  • This advanced technique utilizes robotic-assisted technology to enhance precision in implant placement.
  • Helps improve joint alignment, reduces surgical trauma, and speeds up the healing process.

Revision Knee Replacement:

  • The surgeon removes the old implant, replaces it with a new one, and ensures the joint is stable for long-term function.
  • Performed when an existing knee replacement has failed due to infection, wear and tear, or instability.

Curious about the knee replacement procedure? Let’s walk through the process.

Total Knee Replacement Surgery Procedure

Each year, over 1.5 million knee replacement procedures are performed globally. The procedure includes:
\

Anesthesia Administration: The patient is given either general anesthesia to induce sleep or spinal anesthesia to numb the lower body. This ensures a pain-free surgical experience.

\

Incision & Joint Preparation: The surgeon makes a precise incision to access the knee joint. Damaged cartilage and bone are carefully removed to create space for the artificial implant.

\

Implant Placement: Artificial knee components made of metal and plastic are positioned with utmost accuracy. These implants mimic natural joint movement and restore knee function.

\

Knee Realignment: The surgeon ensures the new joint aligns properly with the leg’s natural structure. This step prevents future instability and promotes smooth movement.

\

Closure & Recovery Initiation: The incision is closed using sutures or staples. Post-surgery, the patient is guided on early rehabilitation exercises to enhance recovery.

Recovery and Aftercare Guide

A well-structured recovery plan is essential for optimal healing and long-term knee function. Recovery involves multiple phases:
\

First Few Days: Pain management through medications, hydration, and gentle movement to prevent stiffness and clot formation.

\

2 Weeks: Improved mobility with the aid of a walker or cane; compression sleeves may be recommended to minimize swelling and enhance circulation.

\

1 Month: Most patients walk independently and resume basic activities. Strength-building exercises help improve joint function.

\

3-6 Months: Full recovery with a return to regular activities and low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling.

Dr. Veeresh has been a blessing to our family.

My mother needed an emergency knee surgery, and he made what felt like an overwhelming situation much more manageable.

He helped us get a timely appointment, explained the procedure clearly, and ensured we were comfortable with every step.

Post-surgery, he was always available to address our concerns and closely monitored her recovery. His genuine care and professionalism made all the difference. We couldn’t have asked for a better doctor during such a critical time.

These guys deleted my honest review.
I don't know how they did it! Only 5 Star reviews are retained or may be they are paid reviews..

Detailed review (written 2nd time) : My wife had simple pain in her left knee, so we had been there for a consultation. Doctor consultation was good. He listened to the issues calmly and gave medication. (consultation charges 500) That's all good. But he also said his assistant will tell some exercises as if they are not charging for that. He didn't mention it as another physiotherapy consultation! That lady tought some exercises for around 10 to 12 minutes that was not at all required and asked 450 rupees which was not mentioned by the doctor or the lady. Be ready to pay 1000 rupees if you visit here. WE FELT CHEATED. Seems like other positive reviews are paid reviews.
Really Dr You have given good treatment t to me. Taken maximum care about my operation. Thank you very much, Good. NIght.
