Hip Replacement in Akshayanagar, Bangalore

Hip Replacement in Akshayanagar, Bangalore

Our musculoskeletal system is the foundation of our body’s mobility and stability; when it fails, our daily functioning is severely impacted. Among its essential elements, the hip joints are paramount in enabling mobility and weight-bearing function. Hip ailments affect millions worldwide, with discomfort and decreased function from conditions such as osteoarthritis and fractures on the increase.

Dr. Veeresh Patage, a top Orthopedic Surgeon in Akshayanagar, Bangalore, comments:

“Hip diseases can significantly reduce a patient’s quality of life, making everyday activities hard to perform. Fortunately, advances in hip replacement surgery have transformed the outcome of treatment, restoring the patient’s mobility and alleviating pain.”

Hip Replacement Surgery is a procedure where a broken hip joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant to restore function and relief from pain. Dr. Patage, a specialist in the industry for over 15 years, is a reputable expert to approach for Hip Replacement in Akshayanagar, Bangalore.

Let us see the different procedures as per individual requirements.

Types of Hip Replacement Surgeries

Hip replacement surgeries are adapted to treat definite patient conditions and requirements. The main types are:

Total Hip Replacement (THR)

This complete replacement procedure replaces both the femoral head (ball) and acetabulum (socket) with artificial parts. It’s widely suggested for patients with huge joint damage in case of arthritis or injury to restore the complete function of the joint and eliminate the pain.

Partial Hip Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty)

In this operation, the femoral head is replaced, and the natural socket is left intact. It is usually done for certain hip fractures, particularly among older people, to treat the affected part without changing the overall joint.

Hip Resurfacing

It’s a technique in which the femoral head is capped with a smooth metal layer and a matched metal cup is inserted into the acetabulum. It’s commonly preferred for young, active patients with good bone quality, with the goal of leaving more of the patient’s natural bone intact.

Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement

Using smaller incisions than traditional methods, this technique hopes to decrease muscle damage, lower postoperative discomfort, and promote faster recovery. Selection between minimally invasive and conventional surgery is based on numerous factors, such as the patient’s anatomy and the surgeon’s skill.

Wondering if you’re a candidate for hip replacement surgery? Let’s consider the prevalent conditions that could result in this procedure.

Who Needs Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement surgery is an option when hip pain and dysfunction severely compromise daily activities and other methods have failed. Typical situations include:

Osteoarthritis

A chronic joint disease causing cartilage to deteriorate, resulting in pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

An autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation and damage, resulting in pain and deformity.

Post-Traumatic Arthritis

Arthritis following a major hip injury or fracture, resulting in joint damage and pain.

Avascular Necrosis

Disease in which the blood supply of the femoral head is compromised, resulting in bone death and joint destruction.

Hip Fractures

Proximal femoral fractures, particularly of the femoral neck, that compromise the strength of the hip joint and its function.

Developmental Hip Dysplasia

A birth defect in which the hip joint is not formed normally, resulting in a tendency toward instability and arthritis later.

Wondering what hip replacement surgery involves? Let’s go through the surgical process step by step.

Hip Replacement Procedure

Each year, over 1.5 million knee replacement procedures are performed globally. The procedure includes:
W

Anesthesia Administration

The patient is either given general anesthesia, causing sleep, or spinal anesthesia, which numbs the lower half of the body, to make them comfortable during the procedure.
W

Incision and Accessing the Hip Joint

A cut is made surgically over the hip to reach the involved joint. Based on the approach (anterior, posterior, or lateral), the surgeon will go around muscles and tissues with care to reveal the joint with minimal disturbance.

W

Removal of Damaged Bone and Cartilage

The damaged femoral head is removed by the surgeon and the hip socket (acetabulum) is prepared by removing the diseased cartilage and bone. This is done to provide a stable area for the implant.

W

Implant Placement

A prosthetic cup is implanted into the acetabulum, usually with a special bone cement or press-fit technique. The femoral component—a metal stem with a smooth ball on top—is placed inside the thigh bone (femur). The new ball rests securely inside the new socket to replicate the natural joint’s movement.
W

Closure and Recovery

After securely positioning the implant components, the movement and stability of the joint are checked by the surgeon. The incision is subsequently closed with sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is placed. Patients are usually transferred to a recovery room where they are closely monitored as the anesthetic effect fades away.

Dr. Veeresh Patage stresses:

“Adequate preparation is crucial to ensure a successful outcome of the surgery. Preoperative instructions are to be followed by the patient, which could be physical training, nutritional support, and maintenance of pre-existing medical conditions. An open conversation with the operating team ensures a proper understanding of what to expect and a hitch-free surgical procedure.”

What occurs following surgery may be as significant as the procedure itself. Here’s what you need to know regarding the recovery process following a hip replacement.

Recovery After Hip Replacement

Recovery time varies from individual to individual, but generally, most patients see notable improvement within a few weeks.

Hospital Stay

The majority of patients remain in the hospital for 1 to 3 days post-surgery. Pain control, mobility support, and observation are included in this phase.

First Weeks at Home

Physical therapy begins shortly after surgery, usually on the same day or the following day. Patients are encouraged to walk and gradually gain mobility. Walkers or crutches assist during the early recovery.

Physical Rehabilitation

A guided program of physiotherapy is essential to strengthen the hip muscles, enhance joint mobility, and avoid stiffness. The majority of patients can return to light activities in 4 to 6 weeks.

Full Recovery

Recovery may take 3 to 6 months, depending on age, overall health, and compliance with post-op rules. Highly functioning patients may even get back to non-impact sports or travel within this period.

These guys deleted my honest review.
I don't know how they did it! Only 5 Star reviews are retained or may be they are paid reviews..

Detailed review (written 2nd time) : My wife had simple pain in her left knee, so we had been there for a consultation. Doctor consultation was good. He listened to the issues calmly and gave medication. (consultation charges 500) That's all good. But he also said his assistant will tell some exercises as if they are not charging for that. He didn't mention it as another physiotherapy consultation! That lady tought some exercises for around 10 to 12 minutes that was not at all required and asked 450 rupees which was not mentioned by the doctor or the lady. Be ready to pay 1000 rupees if you visit here. WE FELT CHEATED. Seems like other positive reviews are paid reviews.
Really Dr You have given good treatment t to me. Taken maximum care about my operation. Thank you very much, Good. NIght.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hip replacement permanent?
Although prosthetic joints are made to endure 15–20 years or more, their survival will vary based on age, activity level, and type of implant. Most patients experience long-standing relief with good care.
Can I walk normally after hip replacement?
Yes, the majority of patients recover normal walking function in a few weeks to months, often with better posture and less pain than pre-surgery.
Are there any hazards to the surgery?
As with any surgery, hip replacement poses risks of infection, blood clots, implant dislocation, or leg length discrepancy. These, however, rarely occur when done by skilled surgeons.
When can I drive after surgery?
Patients can generally return to driving 4–6 weeks after surgery, once they have regained strength and motion in the operated leg. Your surgeon’s clearance is required.
Will I need another surgery later?
Certain patients need a revision operation after 15–20 years if the implant wears out or if complications happen. Developments in prosthetic technology continue to improve implant life.
